📍 New York City – July 28, 2025

A tragic mass shooting unfolded Monday morning at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, leaving five people dead, including an NYPD officer and the suspected gunman.

🔫 What Happened?

According to authorities, the shooter — identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas — entered the high-rise office tower armed with an AR-15-style rifle around 9:30 a.m. He opened fire in the building’s lobby before moving to the upper floors.

Among the victims was 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was reportedly responding to the unfolding violence. Three other individuals were also killed, and one person remains in critical condition. Four others sustained minor injuries while attempting to flee.

🏢 A Targeted Location?

The building at 345 Park Avenue houses several major corporate tenants, including Blackstone and the NFL headquarters. While the motive has not been officially confirmed, some media outlets report that Tamura may have had a personal grievance related to the NFL, possibly stemming from unfulfilled athletic aspirations. Authorities have not verified this theory.

Police say Tamura had a documented history of mental illness, and early investigations suggest he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the building’s 33rd floor.

🚨 Police Response & Aftermath

Emergency services responded within minutes, locking down the area and evacuating floors. Streets around Park Avenue and East 51st Street were cordoned off, and the NYPD urged people to avoid Midtown due to traffic disruptions and mass transit rerouting.

Commissioner Karen Altieri praised first responders for preventing further casualties, stating, “This could have been much worse. Officer Islam died a hero.”

🕯️ Victims Identified

At this time, the names of the other three deceased individuals have not been publicly released, pending family notification. Tributes are pouring in for Officer Islam, a 10-year NYPD veteran known for his community service and mentorship of young officers.

An active multi-agency investigation is underway involving the NYPD, FBI, and ATF. Officials are reviewing surveillance footage, digital evidence, and Tamura’s background for clues into what drove the shooting.

City officials are expected to hold a press conference Tuesday morning with updates.
