Marc Marquez Tops FP1 at Dutch MotoGP Despite Heavy Crash

Marc Marquez leads FP1 at Dutch MotoGP after heavy crash, riding Ducati at Assen Circuit.

Marc Marquez, the current MotoGP championship leader, showed his trademark grit and speed at the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, topping FP1 despite suffering a heavy crash early in the session. The factory Ducati rider lost control at the fast Turn 15, flying into the gravel and taking a significant hit to his left arm and hand. After medical checks, Marquez returned to the track and set the fastest time, extending his dominant run in the 2025 season

Dramatic Start to FP1

Marc Marquez entered the Dutch MotoGP weekend at Assen with a commanding 40-point lead in the championship, fresh off back-to-back perfect weekends at Mugello and Aragon. However, his dominance was challenged early in FP1 when he suffered a dramatic crash at Turn 15, a high-speed left-hander. The rear of his Ducati lost grip, sending him sliding into the gravel and resulting in a heavy impact to his left arm and hand.

“Marquez felt pain and was concerned about his left forearm and hand. However, he wanted to do a few laps before the session ended to check his condition,” reported Ducati team boss Davide Tardozzi.

Resilience and Speed

Despite the crash, Marquez was quickly back on his feet and, after being checked by MotoGP’s medical chief, rejoined the session with about 19 minutes remaining. He wasted no time in reclaiming his position at the top of the timesheets. Marquez set the fastest lap of the session, a 1m32.216s, using fresh medium rear tires. He finished ahead of Tech3 KTM’s Maverick Viñales, who was 0.313s behind.

Assessing the Impact

The crash was a reminder of the risks involved in MotoGP, especially at high-speed circuits like Assen. Marquez’s ability to bounce back and set the pace underscores his mental and physical toughness, qualities that have defined his career. While he appeared to be in some discomfort, especially in his left hand and arm, there were no immediate reports of serious injury, and he was able to complete the session.

Marquez’s Recent Form

Marquez’s performance at Assen continues a remarkable run of form. He has won both the sprint and main races at the last two Grands Prix, taking pole position and leading every session at Mugello and Aragon. His ability to recover from setbacks—whether mechanical issues or crashes—has been a hallmark of his 2025 campaign.

With FP1 behind him, Marquez will be focused on managing any lingering pain and preparing for the rest of the weekend. His ability to push through adversity and remain at the top of the standings is a testament to his determination and skill.
