Gautam Gambhir’s Heated Exchange with Oval Groundsman Explained

Gautam Gambhir confronts Oval head groundsman Lee Fortis during India’s practice session before the 5th Test.

📍 London – July 28, 2025

India’s practice session ahead of the 5th Test at The Oval got off to a tense start when batting coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a heated on-field altercation with the venue’s head groundsman Lee Fortis.

Witnesses reported Gambhir raising his voice and wagging his finger as Fortis objected to the Indian team bringing training equipment onto the practice square.

What Triggered the Dispute?

According to Sitanshu Kotak, India’s assistant coach, the flashpoint can be traced back to a disagreement earlier in the morning.

“Our support staff had gone to inspect the match pitch, which is routine for us everywhere. Lee [Fortis] spoke to them in a way Gautam didn’t appreciate,” Kotak explained. “Gautam simply said, ‘Do not talk to the support staff like this.’ It was normal.”

Kotak further noted that Fortis has a reputation for being a tough character, adding:

“Before coming to The Oval, most of the team already knows that the curator is not the easiest person to get on with.”

No Lasting Impact on Preparation

Despite the fiery moment, India’s training session continued as planned. Sources within the camp confirmed that the disagreement did not disrupt the team’s practice schedule ahead of the crucial final Test.

The Oval pitch has historically favored seamers early on before flattening out, making pitch preparation and inspections an essential part of both teams’ plans.
